Until 25 February 2018, at the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca in Milan, it will be possible to visit the exhibition Environments / Environmentsdedicated to the 20th century master Lucio Fontanaedited by Marina Pugliese, Barbara Ferriani and Vicente Todolí.
Greatness in the ephemeral in the art of Lucio Fontana
Inaugurated last 20 September, Environments / Environments brings together for the first time, in the space of the Naves, 9 spatial environments and 2 environmental interventions created by Lucio Fontana between 1949 and 1968 for Italian and international galleries and museums.
The corpus of works, displayed in an innovative and unprecedented setting, highlights the innovative and precursor force of Fontana, a genius of spatial experimentation and author of innovative and meaningful projects, which the artist himself destroyed after the exhibition in order to underline their ephemeral nature.
Environments / Environments
The greatness of the exhibition lies precisely in the meticulous reconstruction of many of these rooms, which followed long study and careful research by the art historian Marina Pugliese and the restorer Barbara Ferrianialso thanks to the valuable contribution of the Lucio Fontana Foundation.
Fontana is rightly counted among the Italian artists who marked the 20th century: he was responsible for the birth of the Spatialism and a new interpretation of the concepts of space and light, void and cosmos. Going beyond two-dimensionality, Fontana in fact revolutionised painting, sculpture and space, contaminating them with his peculiar conception of matter.
The exhibition Environments / Environments collects the artist's most productive nucleus of works, a source of inspiration for the international neo-avant-garde currents that were to emerge shortly afterwards.

New concepts of space are born and developed in Fontana's works, in which emptiness and matter alternate, harmonise, dialogue with light and its absence. Monochromes are interrupted by discrete cuts, overflowing with a thousand interpretations: a breach in human certainties, an artistic philosophy to be admired and internalised.
