Sydney Musical Plaza

Sydney Musical Plaza is the name of the fascinating project by French architect Guillaume Mazars for the construction of a new music pavilion in the heart of the Royal Botanic Garden from Sydney, which received the critics' award in the competition organised by Archmedium in 2017, named Sydney Rehearsal Follies.

Sydney is Australia's largest and most populous city and the main centre of culture and music throughout the country. It is without doubt among the most multicultural cities in the world, with a diversity that is reflected in the popular culture expressed in music.

Sydney Musical Plaza: the project

The removal of walls from the pavilion invites people to enter and discover the wonderful music created by the students of the Sydney Conservatory. The open space generated by this organisation of volumes can thus be admired by an extremely large audience.

The main intention is to create a low-tech installation that complements the existing Opera House by offering aalternative access experience to the music scene.

La Sydney Musical Plaza designed by Mazars is covered by a large sail, suspended on a network of cables stretched between two elegant metal blades planted in the ground.
The roof is made of a semi-transparent waterproof fabric, which is tensioned by cables, creating an extremely light and luminous overall effect: the shapes modelled in this way also strongly echo the original design of the Opera House.

"The use of space within the pavilion," explains Mazars, "is very flexible and easy to reconfigure, in accordance with the different types of events hosted: from traditional concerts with special guests, to improvised live music sessionsto the most bizarre and innovative musical experiments.”
