The year 2020 was indeed a sad year. And among the many people who are sadly no longer with us is one of the greatest artists of contemporary art: Christo.
His arttemporary and nomadic, he began by wrapping cans and statues. The concept of the fabric that hides the object but is nevertheless capable of revealing its characteristics. The meaning is not to be found in the fabric itself, but in the symbolic gesture of the cloth that wraps, while still allowing people to enjoy the new look of the work being wrapped. The 'simple' act of covering is not exhausted in the act itself. Behind the act of wrapping, there has always been intense planning work, the great effort in researching and choosing sites, dealing with the cumbersome bureaucratic paperwork regarding permits, the long work of financing the project, which has always been independent of sponsors and therefore self-financed. Years, sometimes decades, of work that would come to an end in a handful of weeks of installation. The wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the longest of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects, so much so that the very first outcome dates back to 1962, when Christo made the first photomontage of the wrapped monument.
