A forgotten jewel of design, among the beautiful articles of the Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen, finally sees the light of day thanks to Carl Hansen & Son. Designed in 1953, the simple and elegant BM0253 shelving system is a good example of modular furniture by Børge Mogensen.
Børge Mogensen's multifunctional shelving system embodies a rhythmic, transparent and graphically distinctive language. The shelves represent a traditional canon of functionalist design and are a natural addition to the extensive collection of furniture classics by Carl Hansen & Son. Carl Hansen & Son is expanding its Børge Mogensen collection with a flexible shelving system that has never been in production before. Carl Hansen & Son, in collaboration with Børge Mogensen's family, has brought the famous designer's forgotten designs back to life. The result is an expandable shelving system that can be rebuilt, modelled and adapted to the needs and size of the room. Børge Mogensenone of Denmark's most prominent furniture designers, has left a legacy of a wide range of versatile and functional products, some of which are already part of the Carl Hansen & Son collection of classic pieces. Now we add another piece to the famous designer's story, this time a practical shelving unit that invites customisation, just as Mogensen wanted.
The flexible, multifunctional shelving system is the embodiment of simplicity with its veneered shelves of various sizes and compartments with doors, all of which can be assembled using a structure made of cylindrical metal rods of different lengths. The shelves and modules with doors can be combined according to personal requirements and the mix of open and closed modules creates a rhythmic and airy expression.

The modular structure offers the freedom to assemble and combine the shelving system according to individual needs and desires and to adapt the furniture to the size of the house. This flexibility makes it possible to create a wide variety of furniture, such as a sideboard or a bookcase that continues to grow as your book collection expands. This modular structure and great flexibility have been the hallmarks of many of Børge Mogensen's furniture pieces - a concept that includes furniture elements that can be combined and matched according to personal needs. This concept became popular in the early 1930s, and Børge Mogensen played a key role in its establishment during the 1940s and 1950s. Børge Mogensen always focused on the people who would use his furniture. Throughout his life, he tried to develop simple, functional designs that encouraged and fostered self-expression, created to be long-lasting and with high-quality materials so that they could be passed down from generation to generation. His experience as a cabinetmaker and furniture designer helped make wood his favourite material, and his respect for this organic and natural material is clearly reflected in the BM0253 shelving system.
The shelves and counters are a combination of solid wood and Veneered MDFmanufactured by hand with the utmost care. The shelves have rounded edges and the doors are fitted with small, discreet handles milled into the wood to ensure easy and effortless movement of the sliding doors. Manufactured with the utmost attention to detail and great craftsmanship, the shelving system is available in oak oiled, white oiled oak and oiled walnut, choices that fit perfectly with the rest of Carl Hansen & Son's extensive collection. The doors are also available in painted MDF in grey, brown, blue and green, all selected by Børge Mogensen in 1953 for the shelving system and used in his designs. The doors are also available in black. The frame is available in grey or black powder paint.
The shelving system will be available in shops from September 2020.
