The public work signed by Jasmine Pignatelli: Locating Laterza. A sequence of ceramic dots and lines that translate into Morse Code the geographical coordinates of the Apulian town overlooking the second largest ravine in Europe.
Jasmine Pignatelli creates Morse Code Art Signals
In the historic centre of Laterza (TA) stands a graphic of dots and lines in morse code that reproduce the combination of numbers 40° 38′ 0″ N / 16° 48′ 0″ E: the geographical coordinates of the city itself. With this public intervention, the municipality has placed itself at the centre of a global measuring and positioning system, not only physical and geographical, but also artistic.
Locating Laterza aims to symbolically locate and physically locate the city of Laterza, enabling the place to be found, defined, participated in and intercepted from an artistic point of view.
For the artist Jasmine Pignatelli Morse Code, historically used all over the world to send signals, represents the ambition to generate a Art Signalevoking a kind of antenna that communicates to the audience an invitation to awareness of being in a certain place and time.
When artistic identity becomes an encounter and discovery of the other
The work is an invitation to sharing, discovery and interaction, serving as a symbol of a humanity devoted to knowledge. But Locating Laterza is also a project for the civil and cultural re-appropriation of public places and their identity within a globalised system that tends to annul spaces and distances: a recurring theme in the studies of artist Jasmine Pignatelli, who explains her point of view as follows:
"With Locating Laterza I tell the story of the territory through precise and non-confusing, unique and absolute coordinates that define us and make us what we are. An invitation to meet and discover the other from us, to enter into a relationship with a place and initiate an artistic reflection on the mutual recognition of the dignity of each of us who are in the World, leading to an evolution towards multiplicity rather than individuality. The aim is to create a network of territories united by the same art signal, bearer of the same message".
L'site-specific workowned by the Municipality of Laterza and the MuMa - Museum of Majolica - is located on the façade of the former City Gendarmerie in Via Fontana.
Locating Laterza was realised by Jasmine Pignatelli during an artistic residency resulting from a project by the MiBACT Regional Secretariat and financed with European funds.
