From destruction to beauty: this is the challenge of Vaiathe project born from the idea but above all from the environmental sensitivity of some young people, following the destruction a year ago of more than 42 million trees, felled by the storm Vaia on Dolomites. A devastating impact on the land, with a catastrophic spectacle that only images can tell in their raw truth.
In order to support local communities and restore the balance of the ecosystem, the Vaia project was born, a new way of creating objects without depleting raw materials, which come directly from trees that have been blown down by the storm.
Recovering that fallen wood has proved to be a concrete response to the consequences of climate change, and the creation of design objects from that wood today teaches us that a new way of thinking, of living, is indeed possible.
Not only that: for every item sold, Vaia pledges to plant a new tree. A philosophy of acting together that goes back to that connection that trees establish with each other through their roots, acting as a true community.
From the 'wounds' in the wood of the split logs, simple objects come to life, such as the cube with its regular, elegant shape, the result of the natural material shaped by the unique intervention of its maker. A design object, of which no two pieces are alike, designed by Giorgio Leonardelli, Gabriele Motter and Alice Tonelli and made of larch wood by hand by experienced carpenters.
Taking this philosophy beyond the borders of north-eastern Italy and to all areas torn apart by hydrogeological disasters due to climate change is our goal.
